A retired law and political science professor, Rodney Malpert spends much of his free time playing chess. Rodney Malpert has achieved master level in chess and is a member of the Nebraska Chess Hall of Fame.
Rodney Malpert’s interest in the game began in the 1970s when the game saw a spike in popularity in Nebraska and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln won the chess national championship. Some describe him as a visionary for his accomplishments, which include reaching level 2,400 when the average master has a rating of 2,200.
In recent years, Mr. Malpert has organized events and helped other players improve their game. In 2022, he assisted players preparing for the Cornhusker State Games Chess Tournament. His efforts to promote chess led him to bring the Nebraska Hall of Fame Chess Celebration to Lincoln in May 2024. He and other state chess greats were inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame as part of the festivities.
Mr. Malpert’s chess accomplishments include being selected to present the Best Move award in the Open and winning a trophy for the biggest upset for an unrated player at the Cornhusker State Games. He currently resides in Lincoln, Nebraska.
